Isle of style: designing a custom kitchen island that works for you

19 August 2024

The joy of a complete kitchen renovation is you can perfect the kitchen design to work harmoniously with your lifestyle. A kitchen renovation is more than simply an opportunity to refresh the room, it’s a chance to create a space that works for the whole family, and one way this can be achieved is adding a custom kitchen island.

  • Kitchen islands are highly versatile and bring great benefits to a kitchen:
  • Additional counter space
  • Enhanced custom storage
  • Seating area and hub for entertaining
  • Versatile workstation
  • Improved kitchen zoning
  • Increased home value
  • Add interest and colour to a kitchen interior design

The key to a successful kitchen island design is to identify the functions you really want it to fulfil. Rather than have the island mediocrely serve all possible uses, isolate the options to two or three for an exceptional kitchen island design that is highly functional. Finesse Joinery’s kitchen designers in Christchurch are expert at helping clients decipher exactly what their needs are before creating custom kitchen design blueprints to accommodate their requirements and lifestyle choices. Once it is understood how the island is going to be used, it’s time to make it stylish.

Kitchen interior design – adding the magic

The best kitchen islands seamlessly blend functionality with style. As one of the most prominent features in your kitchen, second only to the flooring, your island should be timeless, durable, and visually striking. When you visit our kitchen showroom in Christchurch, our designers will guide you through various options to help you discover what truly resonates with you. But until then, here are a few things to consider

Shade it your way: custom kitchen island colour

Kitchen island paint ideas should always come from the heart – there are no rules to follow. Use the island to add a splash of colour to neutral perimeter cabinets or choose a neutral colour to ground a kitchen which otherwise features whites and wood tones. Colour drenching, painting your island, kitchen cabinets and walls in the same colour, remains a popular kitchen interior design approach, although do consider a different colour for the benchtop to make the island a distinguished focal point. Colour can be used to either maintain a level of cohesion or make a bold statement. Click here for kitchen cabinet and island colour inspiration.

Top it off: material choices for your kitchen island

Choosing the right benchtop material for your kitchen island is essential, as it must balance both functionality and aesthetics. Start by considering how you'll use the island. If it’s primarily for meal prep, durable materials like granite or quartz are excellent choices due to their resistance to scratches and stains. Marble offers a luxurious, timeless appeal but demands more upkeep. For a warm, natural feel, wood brings a rustic charm and is easy to sand and refinish. No matter the material, it should be durable enough to handle the wear and tear of daily use.

TIP: while there are various materials available to suit different budgets, you can save money by mixing and matching worktops to create zones in your kitchen.

Continuous surfaces for a sleek kitchen design

Waterfall edges are a hallmark of luxury in modern kitchen design, offering a sleek, minimalist aesthetic that’s highly sought after in contemporary spaces. This design feature extends the benchtop vertically at a 90-degree angle, flowing seamlessly to the floor, creating a continuous, cohesive surface. Beyond its striking visual impact, a waterfall edge enhances the kitchen’s overall unity by connecting different zones. It also provides practical benefits, such as protecting the cabinets below and eliminating sharp corners—perfect for homes with children (and/or accident-prone adults).

Light up your island: shining a spotlight on kitchen design

Lighting transforms kitchen islands. Practically it makes the space usable, but with respect to kitchen interior design, it can tie the overall look of the kitchen together. The key is to introduce lighting that elevates the ambiance without overshadowing it. Consider classic, well-designed shapes thoughtfully placed to highlight the island as the centrepiece of the kitchen.

How big should a kitchen island be?

To ensure comfortable movement and an efficient workflow around your kitchen island, it’s crucial to have enough clearance. Pathways should be unobstructed, with a minimum width of 91 cm between the cabinetry and the island, and ideally 107 cm in the cooking zone. Having defined the role of the kitchen island, you can better understand the minimum width and depth required to accommodate functions like seating or large appliances such as dishwashers.

The best kitchen island designs hit the sweet spot between providing ample workspace and storage without overwhelming the kitchen or hindering traffic flow. A general rule of thumb is to keep the kitchen island below 10% of the total kitchen area.

Is my kitchen big enough for a kitchen island?

Your kitchen might feel spacious now, but will it still feel that way once a kitchen island is added? Ideally, kitchens should be between 4 and 5 meters wide to comfortably accommodate an island, depending on the island’s size, without making the space feel cramped. The flow of your kitchen should never be sacrificed for extra storage and benchtop – there are alternative storage solutions to kitchen islands.

For example, a peninsula is a fantastic option to give the storage and enhanced functionality you crave but requires less area.
